Economic Development minister & Presidential sibling Basil Rajapaksa has blueprint to develop Neduntheevu/Delft into an eco-tourist resort

Neduntheevu meaning long Island in Tamil is Sri Lanka’s largest off shore Island. It is in the Palk straits & is called Delft in EnglishThe oval shaped flat Island is about 50 sq km in area. It is roughly 8 km in length & 6 km in breadth.It is 28 miles away from Jaffna city
Addressing a meeting in Delft, Basil told residents to be ready to cater to tourists as he wanted to make the Island an eco-tourist resort
Neduntheevu would be beautified into a magnificient tourist attraction.A power plant to supply constant electricity would also be set up
The economic development minister who is in charge of tourism told Neduntheevu residents cabana type cottages would be constructed there
Cabanas are small huts with thatched roofs built near large bodies of water in tropical regions. These are very popular with eco-tourists
Basil Rajapaksa wants to build cabanas to be owned,maintained & managed by Delft residents who will be trained in hospitality service sector
A project to beautify Delft as a tourist attraction will be implemented. A small power plant will be set up to supply regular electricity
Infra-structure in Neduntheevu will be developed. The jetty will be deepened, Roads will be modernised. A water supply scheme will be set up
A network of bunds similiar to the Dikes in Netherlands will be built to prevent sea water intrusion inland&curb increasing salinity of soil
Rijckloff van Goens who was Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1678-1681 named 8 Islands in the north after Dutch cities & towns
While Dutch names have gone out of usage in the other Islands, Neduntheevu retains the Dutch name&is named as Delft in Admirality charts
The picturesque Island has a population (Tamil) of 5-6000 people. It is an ideal tourist spot with golden sandy beaches & sparkling shallow seas
A remarkable feature of Delft are herds of semi-feral ponies.These privately owned freely roaming herds of ponies live freely in the wild
These descendants of horses& ponies introduced to the Island by the Portugese & then maintained by the Dutch are owned by the people of Delft
There is also a small Dutch fort&ruins of Dutch stables.There are also ruins of a fortress belonging to legendary Tamil ruler Vediyarasan
An indigenous folk drama or Naatukoothu about the King Vediyarasan is very popular in the Island. Delft also has a gigantic Baobab tree
Another feature of Delft are the walls surrounding compounds being constructed by balancing coral&limestones tightly on top of each other
Among other Delft attractions are a giant footprint engraved in stony ground & an ultra- deep freshwater well called Devils well
Transport to Delft is by sea with ferries leaving for & returning from Neduntheevu to Kurikaattuvaan pier in Pungudutheevu Island
A tragic incident etched in Neduntheevu memory is the mid sea massacre of Tamil passengers aboard the vessel “Kumuthini” by the navy in 1985

Father Xavier Thaninayagam (1913 – 1980)Many of Neduntheevu’s sons&daughters have done well in life through studies. The Tamil scholar Rev.Fr Xavier Thaninayakam is of Delft origin
Lack of economic opportunities has led to large scale migration of Neduntheevu people to Jaffna peninsula& the northern mainland of Wanni

I have try to put few wording of Delft because my grand father also born in Nedunthivuu then moved to Jaffna for education.After some time he is migrated to Malaya.
I am happy to see that Mr.Basil has identified that the Nedunthivu got potential to become a tourist hub.
I also sadly noted here that EPDP criminals (Nepolian,Sam…) are using Delft as thier shelter once they have finished their assignments in Jaffna & Vavuniya.

Dear Samarasekara,Neduntheevu is totally controlled by Navy n EPDP. Ppl can not freely express their ideas, even in past elections no other political parties allowed to go there n have meetings independently. U can find this informations in election monitoring group’s website. Moreover they r fully conrolling fishing activities, exporting ect. So it won’t be a people led project, but definitly Douglus-Basil project, help to fill their pockets.

Once the “Eco tourism” is started, Neduntheevu will not remain being a “pristine island” If the idea is devoid of any hidden agenda, the INDIGENOUS people may benefit. But in Sri Lankan politics every thing has a hidden agenda!!!

Any developmental work that can create jobs and provide indirect income to the people of the area in neglected Jaffna District will be welcome by the people. The necessary infra-structural development like power, water, sanitation facilities will be a boon. But an announcement of this nature should be much more than the wish of an individual – and more so an election-related one. It should be part of a wider plan produced by experts outside the political spectrum that is development-centric and not to serve short and parochial election related goals. We have had fartoo many “plan to do” “will be done” “will be with you very soon” falsehoods. The call from the public to the Govt to publish a list of development work done in the North giving details of location, amount allocated/spent, source of funding etc etc is ignored. If substantial work has been done, such a list with full publicity will be a very useful tool to gain votes in the upcoming elections.
By the way has the Swimming Pool at Jaffna Central College – started years ago with much fanfare under the young leadership of the President’s son and his Blue Brigade – been completed? A pool should not take more than a few months to come out with – given the lethargic speed at which government building matters are usually done.

This is great news. This area thanks to the war has been untouched. This would be a great opportunity for the residents of Neduntheevu.
Depsite the war, Tamils have had a strong interest in Tourism both as promoters and as tourists. A fact not many in the circles are aware of. Tamil business heads from corporate entities like Aitken Spence and John Keells have been working hard pre and post war time to keep the industry afloat. They had to combat both internal eco political forces along with the external forces like the Diaspora’s initiatives to stop tourists coming to Sri Lanka.
Recently Sri Lankan Airlines has pointed a Tamil gent to run the airlines and boost revenues. Whilst his promotion was long due, he is now working hard to rejuvenate and rebrand the airline.
The perception is that tourism is at an all time high in Sri Lanka which are claims made by interested parties. Whilst post war hype initiated a stream of tourist mostly from India it has soon died down. We have to compete with the likes of Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and India. Fact that we are friends with the axis of evil has also not been in our favour.

The origin of Kayts is not Dutch but Portugese.The portugese who were here before the Dutch built a fort in present day Kayts known as Ooraathurai or Oorkavalthurai then and now referred to by some as Kaavaloor.
The portugese fort was called Fortalaza do Cais.In portugese language Cais means a jetty or pier or harbour or landing spot. The English word Quay is connected to Cais
Cais became Kai in due course .Kayts was derived from this and used by the Dutch and British
Like Delft being used Kayts also is in use. But it was not a name given by the Dutch to the place.present day Kayts is actually part of the Island kown as Velanai. Although the dutch named Velanai as Leiden they did not give a specific Dutch name given after a town or area in Holland to “Kayts”.
Other areas in the Velanai-Kayts Island like Karamban, Allaipiddy,Naranthanai etc were also not given specific Duth names. I suppose all the areas in this Island of Velanai were called as Leiden while the harbour ,fort and adjavent areas were also called Kayts
But when the Dutch built another fort on another small Island near Kayts harour they named it Fort Hammenheil in Dutch. Tamils call it the “kadal kottai” or Island fort

Nonetheless Tamils got the same issues of village name changes etc, till today. In couple of years time someone write about Mahinda Mawatha, the new name given somewhere in Kilinochi.

Senkadagala (The mountain where the enemy forces were slain; As they were many times from 1594-1812) is the proper name of the region in which the Kandy town is.. KANDY is the word used by Sinhalese and Malayalees for a long time.
KANTHA means Mountain in Tamil. Mountain God Skanda is always known as KANTHA SWAMY. That is why Tamils have millions of Kanthaswamys and Kanthaiyas. Sinhalese never have a KANTHA HAMY but lot of Kumary Hamys. Kumaraswamy is another name for Kanthaswamy.
British never started calling Kandy because Kandy is known to many people as KANDY before British. But Brits picked the word Kandy and used because that was the common word at that time.
That is why our Sinhala Racist pandits changed it to Maha Nuwara but Kandyans are still using the word Kandy and not Maha Nuwara.
Brits picked the commonnly used names. Negombo, Chilaw, Puttalam and other words used by Tamils.
Sengadagala or Kandy or Gundasala does not have any Sinhala meaning but PURE TAMIL.
You did not tell why a NALLUR exist in Panadura where a Hindu priest was thrown in the boiling tar by Catholic Sinhalese in 1958!

குமுதினிப் படகினுள் எம்மினியஉடன் பிறப்புகளை கொன்றொழித்த கயவர்களை நயினாதீவின் கடற்படை முகாமினுள்ளே இனம் காட்டுவேனென துணிந்து மனித உரிமைச்சபையினுக்கு வாக்குமூலம் அளித்தவர் தோழர் காங்கேசு சாந்தலிங்கம். தன் அன்பு ம னைவியையும் பிறக்கவிருந்த வாரிசையும்,உற்றவரையும் ஓரே நாளில் இழந்து பட்ட மரமாக நிற்கும் அவரிடம் தொடர்பு கொண்டபோது, நாங்கள் மனித உரிமைச் சபைக்கு அளித்த முறைப்பாடுகள் மூடிமறைக்கப்பட்டுவிட்டன.நியாயங்கள் மழுங்கடிக்கப் பட்டுவிட்டன. நீதி நெடுந்தீவு மக்களின் புதை குழியோடு புதைந்து போனது.பச்சைக் குழந்தையைகூட மிச்சம் விடாமல்வெறியாடிக் கொன்ற கொடியவரின் முகத்திரையை நிச்சயம்தமிழ் மக்கள் கிழித்தெறிவார்கள் என்றார் அவர்.

INDICTMENT AGAINST SRI LANKASRI LANKA NAVY MURDERS PASSENGERS ON KUMUTHINI - MAY, 1985

Kumuthini is the name of the passenger ferry between the island of Delft and Punguduthivu, via Nainathivu. On the 15th May 1985, Sri Lankan Navy personnel stopped her at mid-sea, and the government Navy personnel bludgeoned and cut to death all her passengers, including women and children.

Excerpt from Letter from Secretary General, Amnesty International to Sri Lanka President J.R.Jayawardene,

7 June 1985In respect of the allegations that navy personnel may have been responsible for the killings of unarmed Tamil passengers travelling on 15 May on a ferry boat between Delft and Nainativu, I would like to draw your attention to the account, which Amnesty International received after writing to His Excellency the President, of a survivor who gave details of how the killings took place and identified one of those participating in the killings as belonging to the Nainativu Island Naval Camp. According to this account:"We boarded the government launch "Kumudini" at about 7.45 a.m. on 15 May 1985...........On the said day when the boat had proceeded towards Nainativu Island for about half an hour, it was ordered stopped by some men who came in a fibre glass boat. About six men boarded "Kumudini" while about two remained in the fibre glass boat which they tied on to "Kumudini". The six men who boarded "Kumudini" had rifles as are carried by naval and army personnel. All of them were dressed variously in blue longs or shorts and T-shirts. However, the blue longs and shorts worn by them made me realise that these men were navy personnel.All the passengers and crew were ordered to enter the forepart of the boat and ordered below deck there, leaving the aft section and the driving cabin completely free. All the pasenqers thus forced into the aft section were made to repeatedly shout out their names, status, locality and where bound to. One man pointing out a gun shouted out such an order in broken Tamil. If anybody lowered his voice the man would threaten to shoot him unless he raised his voice. As the passengers were made to shout in this manner, one from the crowd of passengers was called at a time and led into the aft section.I nor the others in the fore section knew what was happening to each person who was led away in this manner owing to the din created by the forced shouting of passengers. After about 12 persons had been called into the aft section in this manner we heard the report of a gun and I saw a body falling overboard and being washed alongside the boat. I was able to see this as I was standing...........When it came to my turn I went towards the aft section. On approaching it I saw blood all over and the cut pieces of human bodies. At this juncture I shouted and refused to move. I was then hit on the head and I fell. I felt that I was dragged and cut on my head by some kind of a hatchet. I received further injuries on my stomach and legs and fell between the boards of the bottom of the boat. I pretended to be dead and lay there. I felt further bodies falling over mine and the cries of distress of men and women.About 45 minutes later I heard the fibre glass boat being started and going away...... Of the men who were engaged in this attack I was able to identify one of them as a navy personnel whom I have seen in the said area and is from Nainativu Island Naval Camp."

குமுதினிப் படுகொலை - நீதி மறுக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு துயரத்தின் கதை:

குமுதினிப் படுகொலையானதுமனித உரிமை அமைப்புக்களின் சான்றுகளில் இருந்து மறைக்கப்பட்டு, நீதி மறுக்கப்பட்டதாக, அல்லது நீதி வழங்கப்படாததாக இருபது தசாப்தங்களுக்கு மேலாகிவிட்டது. இத்தனை ஆண்டுகள் கழிந்தபின்னரும் குமுதினிப் படுகொலையில் உயிர் தப்பிய படகுப்பணியாளரையும் மற்றும் உயிர் தப்பிய பயணிகளையும் சிறிலங்கா கடற்படைதேடி வருகிறது. ஊர்காவற்துறை, இறங்குதுறை சிறிலங்கா கடற்படை முகாமாக தொடர்ந்து இருந்து வருகிறது. இதன் அருகேதான் குமுதினி தரையேற்றப்பட்டு திருத்தப் பணிக்கு உட்படுத்தப்பட்டு வந்தது. அங்கு குமுதினியின் சில பணியாளர்கள் தங்கியிருந்தனர். இவர்களிடம் சென்ற சிறிலங்கா கடற்படையினர் 1985ஆம் ஆண்டு குமுதினி படுகொலையில் தப்பிய பயணிகள் எங்கே இருக்கிறார்கள் என விசாரிக்கின்றனர். அதேபோல் குறிகட்டுவான் இறங்குதுறையிலும், நயினாதீவு சிறிலங்காக்கடற்படை இறங்குதுறையிலும் தப்பிய படகுப்பணியாளரைப்பற்றியும்,தப்பிய பயணிகள் பற்றியும் தொடர்ந்தும் சிறிலங்கா படையினர் விசாரித்தே வருகின்றனர். இது ஏன்?. 1985ஆம் ஆண்டு மே மாதம் 15 ஆம் நாள் காலை ஏழு மணிக்கு நெடுந்தீவு மாவிலி துறைமுகத்திலிருந்து 64 பயணிகளுடன் புறப்பட்டபோது, பொதுவேலைகள் திணைக்களத்திடம் இருந்து இப்போதைய வீதி அபிவிருத்தி அதிகாரசபையின் கீழுள்ள குமுதினிப்படகு அரை மணி நேர பயணத்தின் பின் சிறிலங்காக கடற்படையால் நடுக்கடலில் வழிமறிக்கப்பட்டது. இரு சிறிய பிளாஸ்ரிக் படகில் வந்த சிறிலங்கா கடற்படையினர் குமுதினிப் படகை நிறுத்தச்சொல்லி அதை நிறுத்தியபின்னர் 6 கடற்படையினர் முக்கோணக் கூர்க்கத்திகள், கண்டங் கோடாரிகள், இரும்புக்கம்பிகள் சகிதம் குமுதினிப்படகில் ஏறினர். படகின் பின்புறம் இருந்த பயணிகளை படகின் முன்பக்கம் செல்லுமாறும் மிரட்டினர் அவர்கள் அனைவரும் சென்றுவிட்டனர். படகின் பின்புறம் இரு புற இருக்கைகளுக்கு நடுவே இயந்திரத்திலிருந்து பின்புறம் புறப்புளருக்குச் செல்லும் ஆடுதண்டுப்பகுதி மூடப்பட்டிருந்த பலகைகளை படையினர் களற்றி (இருக்கைகளிலிருந்து 4 அடி ஆழம் உள்ளதாக இது இருந்தது) அதன் பின் படகுப் பயணிகள் ஒவ்வொருவராக உள்ளே அழைக்கப்பட்டனர். குமுதினி இருபக்க வாசல்களிலும் உள்ளும், வெளியும் கடற்படையினர் இருந்தனர். ஒவ்வொருவராக வந்த பயணிகளை அழைத்து கத்தியால் குத்தியும், கண்டம் கோடரிகளால் வெட்டியும், இரும்புக் கம்பிகளால் தாக்கியும் அந்த படகின் நடுப்பள்ளத்தில் போடப்பட்டனர். கொல்லப்பட்டவர் போக குற்றுயிராய்ப்போனவர்கள் குரல் எழுப்ப முடியாது செத்தவர்கள்போல் கிடந்தனர். இச்சம்பவத்தில்,தாக்குதல் நடக்குதென குரல் கொடுக்க முனைந்தவர்கள் அதிகாரிகளால் தாக்கப்பட்டு இறந்தார்கள். உள்ளே பள்ளமாக இருந்த பகுதியில் மக்கள் போடப்பட்டதால் முன்புறமிருந்து செல்லும் பயணிகளுக்கு ஒவ்வொருவராக முன்பு சென்றவர்களுக்கு என்ன நடந்தது என்பது தெரியாதிருந்தது. இதனையறிந்தஒருவர் கடலில் குதித்துக் கொண்டார். அதன் பின் படகில் இருந்த சிலரும் கடலில் குதிக்கத் தொடங்கினர். இதனைக் கண்ட படையினர் துப்பாக்கிகளால் அவர்களைச் சுட்டுக் கொன்றனர். ஏழுமாதக் குழந்தை முதல் வயோதிபர்கள் வரை ஈவிரக்கமற்றமுறையில் படுகொலை செய்யப்பட்டனர். இச்சம்பவத்தில் இறந்தவர் போல கிடந்த சிலர் உயிர்தப்பிக் கொண்டார்கள். இப்படுகொலையின் பின் காயம் அடைந்தவர்கள் புங்குடுதீவு வைத்தியசாலைக்கும், யாழ்.போதனா வைத்தியசாலைக்கும் சிகிச்சைக்காக அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டனர். இவர்கள் கொல்லப்பட்ட விடயத்தை மருத்துவமனையால் சிறிலங்கா காவல்துறையிடம் முறையிட்டும் எதுவித நடவடிக்கைகளும் எடுக்கப்படவில்லை. பதிலாக சில நாட்களில் தப்பியவர்களை மருத்துவமனைக்கு வந்த சிறிலங்கா கடற்படையினர் தேடத்தொடங்கினர். நோயாளிகள் உடனடியாக மருத்துவமனையிலிருந்து விடுதிகளுக்கு இடம் மாற்றப்பட்டு மறைக்கப்பட்டனர். உயிர் தப்பிய படகுப் பயணிகளை படையினர் புங்குடுதீவு மருத்துவமனையில் தேடிச்சென்ற போது சிலர் மறைக்கப்பட்டு தலை மறைவாகியே சிசிச்சை பெற்றனர். சிலரைத் தவிர ஏனையோர் வெளிநாடுகளுக்குத்தப்பிச் சென்றுவிட்டனர். அரசப் படைகள் படகுப்பயணிகள் தப்பி விடக்கூடாது என்பதற்காக அவர்களைத்தேடித்திரிந்தனர். இன்றும் தேடிக்கொண்டே இருக்கின்றனர். எதுவிதவிசாரணைகளும் மேற்கொள்ளப்படாது இக் கடற்படுகொலை மறுக்கப்பட்டு மறைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. ஆனால் சாட்சிகளை தேடியழிக்கச் சிறிலங்காக்கடற்படையினர் தீவிர அக்கறைகாட்டி வருகின்றனர். விசாரணைகளற்று மறைக்கப்பட்ட குமுதினி கடற்படுகொலை வெளிச்சத்துக்கு கொண்டு வரப்படவேண்டும். சிங்கள தேசக் காடையர்களால் நிகழ்த்தி மறைக்கப்பட்ட கொடூரங்கள் அம்பலப்படுத்தப்பட வேண்டும்.உலக நாடுகளின் மனச்சாட்சிகளை தட்டி உலுப்ப வேண்டும். இதற்கு இதில் உயிர் தப்பி மனித உரிமைச் சபைக்குச் சாட்சியமளித்து இன்று அச்சம் காரணமாக தலைமறைவாகியுள்ள சாந்தலிங்கம், குமாரசாமி, கணேசபிள்ளை போன்ற பலரும் உண்மைகளை உலகுக்கு இனியாவது வெளிப்படுத்த வேண்டும்.

அது யாழ் குடாநாட்டின் நகர மையத்திற்கு மேற்கே 34 மைல்கள் தொலைவில் அமைந்துள்ள ஒரு அமைதியான தீவு. 10 சதுர மைல்கள் பரப்பினைக் கொண்ட தீவில் 1955ம் ஆண்டு காலப்பகுதியில் மக்கள் பிற இடங்களில் இருந்து குடியேறி தமது வாழ்வினை ஆரம்பித்தனர். இப்போது பத்தாயிரத்துக்கும் அதிகமான மக்களையும் சிறீலங்கா அரச பயங்கரவாதத்தின் கோரமான பதிவுகளையும் தன்னுள் சுமக்கிறது. பொதுவாக இங்கு வாழும் மக்கள் தமது வாழ்வோடு ஒன்றித்துப்போன தேவைகள் சார்ந்தவற்றில் தன்னிறைவு கொண்டிருக்கவில்லை. தேவைகளின் பெரும்பாலானவை யாழ்குடா நாட்டுடன் தொடர்பு பட்டிருந்த தீவகத்தின் குறிகட்டுவான் எனும் இடத்திற்கு சென்று நிறைவு செய்தனர். தீவையும் குறிகட்டுவானையும் பிரித்து இருந்த ஒன்பது மைல் தொலைவு கடலாகியிருந்ததால் தீவுக்கான அனைத்து தொடர்புகளும் கடல் மார்க்கமாகவே நிகழ்ந்தது. மக்கள் தமது அன்றாட கடல் மார்க்கமான போக்குவரத்து 'குமுதினி" என்ற பெயர் கொண்ட படகு மூலமே மேற்கொண்டனர். குமுதினி....! தீவு வாழ்மக்களின் வாழ்வோடு ஒன்றித்துப்போன ஒரு இணைபிரியா அம்சமாகிப் போயிருந்தது. நாளுக்கு இரண்டு தடவை தீவின் மக்களை சுமந்து செல்லும் குமுதினி தீவின் நாளாந்த இயக்கத்திற்கும் மக்களின் வாழ்வாதாரத்திற்கும் உயிர் நாடியாக உயர்ந்து நின்றது. அன்று தீவின் மக்களுக்காக வாழ்ந்த குமுதினி இன்று அரச பயங்கரவாதத்தின் இரத்த சாட்சியாகி உயர்ந்து நிற்கிறது. 15.05.1985 .......! அன்றுதான் தீவு பூபாளத்தின் இனிமையை இறுதியாக சந்தித்தது. அதன் பின்பு வந்தவைகள் எல்லாம் சோகத்தின் முகாரியாகவே கழிந்தது. அன்றைய காலைப் பொழுதில் குமுதினியும் வழமை போன்று தனது பணிக்கு தயாராகியது. எப்போதும் போலவே எதிர்பார்ப்புகளாலும் தம்மைச் சுற்றிய நினைவுகளாலும் மனங்களை நிறைத்த மக்கள் கூட்டம் குமுதினியையும் நிறைத்தது. நேரம் காலை ஏழுமணியினைக் கடந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. காலைப் பொழுதின் இனிமை கடற்காற்றின் இதம் கடல் நீரின் உப்புச்சாரல் எல்லாமே ஒன்றாகி மனதின் உணர்வுகளை மென்மையாக்கி நினைவுகளை அகல விரித்தது. இயற்கையின் அரவணைப்பில் சுயத்தின் சோகங்கள் தற்காலிகமாகவேனும் மறந்து இருந்தனர் மக்கள். ஆனால் அந்த அமைதி நீடிக்கவில்லை.அமைதியைக் குலைத்து இறங்கு துறையினை வந்தடைந்த படையினர் குமுதினியை சல்லடை போட்டுத் தேடினர். பயணிகள் கடுமையான விசாரணைக்குள்ளாகினர். சற்று நேரத்தின் முன்பு நிலவிய அமைதி இப்போது பதட்டமாக மாறியது. முன்பு பல தடவை இத்தகைய கசப்பான அனுபவப் பதிவுகளுக்கு சொந்தமாகிப் போனவர்கள். பழையனவற்றுடன் இதனையும் வரவு வைத்துக் கொண்டனர்.ஆனால் அன்றைய நிகழ்வு மாறானதாகவே அமைந்தது.இருப்பினும் தமக்கு நிகழப்போகும் அனர்த்தம் எதனையும் அப்பாவியான அவர்களால் அறிந்திருக்க நியாயம் இல்லை. படையினரின் கெடுபிடிகள் முடிவுக்கு வந்த போது குமுதினி தனது பயணத்துக்கான நேரத்தை தவறவிட்டிருந்தது. இருந்தும் காலை 8.30 மணியளவில் தீவின் இறங்குதுறையில் இருந்து குமுதினி விடைபெற்றது. ஆர்ப்பரித்தெழுந்த நீலக்கடலலை மெல்லக் கடந்த குமுதினியைப் பார்த்து இறங்குதுறை மௌனமாகி நின்றது.தினமும் நிகழும் இப்பார்வையின் மௌனம் அன்று மட்டும் கனதியாகி இருந்தது. ஆர்ப்பரித்தெழுந்த கடலின் மடியில் குமுதினி சென்று கொண்டிருந்தது. வெள்ளைக் கொக்குகள் குமுதினிக்கு மேலாக பறந்து தமது பார்வையினை விரித்து விட்டுப் போயின. சூரியனின் ஒளிக்கீற்று அன்று சற்று வெப்பமாக இருந்தது. நயினைக் கடலில் குமுதினி சென்று கொண்டிருந்தது. அப்போதுதான் கடலம்மாவின் இதயத்தைக் குதறியவாறு சிறீலங்காவின் கடல் வல்லூறுகள் வந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. குமுதினியின் கண்களுக்குத் தெரிந்தது. எதனையுமே விபரீதமாக பார்க்கத் தெரியாத ஏதுமறியா அப்பாவிகளின் பயணம் தொடர்ந்தது. தூரத்தில் தெரிந்த கடல் வல்லூறுகள் இப்போது குமுதினியை நோக்கிப் பாய்ந்து வந்தன. தாய் வல்லூறுக்குத் துணையாக வந்திருந்த இரண்டு வல்லூறுகள் வேகமாக வந்து குமுதினியை வழிமறித்தது. ஆர்ப்பரித்தெழுந்த கடல் மாதாவின் மடியில் குமுதினி மௌனமாகியது. கடல் மாதாவின் இதயத்தைக் குதறிய தாய் வல்லூறு குமுதினியை நெருங்கி வந்து கொலை வெறிபிடித்த கொடுரமான தனது பார்வையால் குமுதினியை குதறியது. பார்வையின் கொடுரத்தைப் பொறுக்காத கடலம்மா தனது அலைக்கரங்களால் ஓங்கியறைந்து கரைகளில் வந்து மோதினாள். இருந்தும் வல்லூறு பணியாது கோபம் கொண்டு ஆடியது. நிகழப் போகும் விபரீதத்தினை உணர்ந்து கொண்ட பயணிகள் நிதானிப்பதற்கிடையில் அது நிகழ்ந்தது. தாய் வல்லூறு குமுதினியை வழிமறிக்க குட்டி வல்லூறுகளில் இருந்து கறுப்பு நிற உடையணிந்த பேய்கள் கைக்கோடாரிகள் , வாள் , இரும்புக் கம்பிகள் போன்ற கூரிய ஆயுதங்களுடன் குமுதினியுள் பாய்ந்தனர். தமது அன்றாட வாழ்வின் தேவை தேடி கடல் வழியில் பயணிப்பவர்களால் என்னதான் செய்யமுடியும் ? கடல் பேய்களிடமிருந்து தப்பிப்பதற்கு வழி ஏதும் அங்கு இருக்கவில்லை.கடல் ஆர்ப்பரித்துக் கொண்டது. அப்பாவிப் பயணிகளால் ஏதும் இயலாது போனது.தமது இயலாமையினை நாம் அப்பாவிகள் எம்மை ஒன்றும் செய்யாதீர்கள் என அவலக்குரல் எழுப்பினர்.ஆனால் கொலை வெறிபிடித்த கடல் பேய்கள் முன்னால் கதறல்களும் புலம்பல்களும் தோற்றுப் போயின. கொச்சைத்தமிழின் உச்சரிப்பில் உரக்க நாமம் எழுப்புமாறு கடல் பேய்களிடம் இருந்து கட்டளை பிறந்தது.அப்பாவிப் பயணிகள் கொடுரமான ஆயதங்கள் முன்னால் பெற்றோரும் சுற்றத்தாரும் கூடி பெருமையுடன் சு10ட்டிய நாமத்தினை தயங்கித் தயங்கி கூனிக்குறுகி உச்சரிக்க அந்தக் கொடுரம் நிகழ்ந்தேறியது. பெற்றோர்கள் முன்னால் பின்ளைகள்,பிள்ளைகள் முன்னிலையில் பெற்றோர்கள்,சகோதரர்கள் முன்னிலையில் சகோதரிகள் துடிக்கத் துடிக்க கொலை வெறி கொண்ட கடற்பேய்களின் கூரிய ஆயதங்களினால் வெட்டியும் குத்தியும் குதறப்பட்டு சரிக்கப்பட்டனர். சரிந்தவர்கள் பலர் கடலுக்கு இரையாகினர். குமுதினியில் இருந்து எழுந்த எம் உறவுகளின் மரண ஓலம் எவருக்கும் தெரியாது அன்று வீசிய சோளகக்காற்றுக்குள் சுற்றி சுழன்று போனது.புத்த பெருமானின் வழித்தோன்றல்களால் எம் உறவுகள் குதறப்பட்ட அந்த இறுதிக்கணம் பச்சிளம் பாலகி சுபாஜினி விஸ்வலிங்கம் எதைத்தான் எண்ணியிருப்பாளோ....? என்ன நிகழ்கிறது என்பது எதனையும் அறிந்திராத அந்த பிஞ்சு மழலை இந்த உலகத்தினை கண் திறந்து பார்த்து ஏழு மாதங்கள் மட்டுமே நிரம்பியிருந்தது.அந்த மழலையால் கூட அன்பையும் அறநெறியையும் போதித்த புத்த பெருமானின் வாரிசுகளான அவர்களிடமிருந்து எதனையும் பெறமுடியாது போனது. ஏதும் அறியாத இந்த மழலை மேனியும் முக்கூர் முனை கொண்ட ஆயதத்திற்குப் பலியாகிப்போனது. ஒன்றரை மணி நேரமாக குமுதினியைக் குதறியவர்கள் நடுக்கடலில் கைவிட்டு அங்கிருந்து மறைந்தனர். முன்பெல்லாம் தீவின் மக்களை சுமந்த குமுதினி அன்று அவர்களின் குருதியையும் சுமந்தது. குமுதினியில் இருந்து வடிந்த குருதியினால் கடல் அன்னை சிவப்பாகிப் போனாள். உச்சத்தில் நின்றிருந்த சு10ரியனும் நயினையில் வீற்றிருந்த புத்தபகவானும் நடுக்கடலில் நிகழ்ந்த கொடுரத்தினை மனதினுள் புதைத்துக் கொண்டு மௌனமாகினர். எப்போதும் காலையிலேயே குறிகட்டுவான் இறங்கு துறையினை வந்தடையும் குமுதினி அன்று வரவில்லை. மதியத்தில் பிறிதொரு படகின் துணையுடன் வந்தடைந்த போதும் அவசர அவசரமாக வெளியேறும் மக்கள் கூட்டத்தினை அன்று காணவில்லை. அவர்கள் சடலங்களாக மட்டுமே வந்து இருந்தனர். குமுதினி மௌனமாகிப் போனதால் தனிமையான தொலை தீவில் வாழ்ந்த மக்களுக்கு தமது உறவுகளின் மரணங்கள் கூட கிட்டாது போனது. பலநூற்றாண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு தர்மத்தின் முறையிலும் நீதியின் சார்பாகவும் திகழ்ந்து இலங்கையினை ஆட்சி புரிந்த தமிழர்களின் மன்னன் எல்லாளன். அந்த உத்தமனின் நாமத்தினை நினைவாக்கும் எல்லாரா எனும் பெயர் கொண்ட கப்பலினையே இப்பாதக செயலுக்கு சிங்கள அரச பயங்கரவாதம் பயன்படுத்தி எல்லாளனின் நாமத்தில் அழியாத வடுவினையும் பதிவாகியது. சிங்களத்தின் ஆட்சியாளரின் ஆசீர்வாதத்தோடு காரைநகர் கடற்படைத் தளத்தில் இருந்து வந்திருந்த கடல் பேய்களின் கப்டன் யு.ஐ.ஜெயவர்த்தனா தலைமையில் நிகழ்த்தப்பட்ட படுபாதகத்தில் 7 மாதப்பச்சிளம் பாலகி சுபாஜினி விஸ்வலிங்கம் 70பது வயது தெய்வானையோடு 36 அப்பாவி பயணிகள் குமுதினியில் சடலங்களாகவும் 71 பயணிகள் மரண காயங்களோடும் மீட்கப்பட்டனர். கசப்பான அந்த அனுபவப் பதிவில் உயிர்பிழைத்தோர் நிகழ்ந்த கொடுரங்களை பக்கம் பக்கமாக அறிக்கைகளாக உலகுக்கு வெளிப்படுத்தினர்.ஆனாலும் அடைந்த பலன் ஏதும் அல்ல. உலகமும் கொடுரங்களாக நோக்காது வெறும் அறிக்கைகளாகவே நோக்கியது. துயர வடுக்களைச் சுமந்த மக்களுக்கு நிகழ்ந்த மற்றும் ஒரு அவலமாக அமைந்தது. 20 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் தமிழர்களின் மனங்களில் பதிவாகிய மனது நினைக்க மறுக்கும் அன்றைய நாளினை ஒரு தடவை மீண்டும் நினைத்துப் பார்க்கிறோம்.... ஓவென ஆர்ப்பரித்தெழும் நயினைக்கடலும் வேகமாக சுழன்றடித்து வீசும் சோளகக் காற்றும் இன்றைய நவீன உலக ஒழுங்கிற்கு புரியாத செய்தி ஒன்றைச் சொல்லுகிறது. உலகமே உங்களுக்கு குமதினியைத் தெரிகிறதா....? நீலக்கடல் ஏன் சிவப்பானது எனப் புரிகிறதா...? கண்திறந்து ஏழு மாதங்களே நிரம்பிய பச்சிளம் பாலகி சுபாஜினியைத் தெரிகிறதா...? 20ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் தீவின் நாளாந்த இயக்கத்திற்கும் மக்களின் வாழ்வாதாரத்திற்கும் உயிர் நாடியாகி உயர்ந்து நின்ற குமுதினி 20 ஆண்டு கடந்தும் இன்னும் சிறீலங்கா அரச பயங்கரவாதத்தின் இரத்த சாட்சியாக உயர்ந்து நிற்கிறது.

a survivor, recounts her experience,“We were traveling on Kumuthini boat for about 30 minutes when we stopped at mid-sea. Navy men climbed up into the boat. They took all of us to the front of the boat while they sat at the entrance. One of them had a gun. They asked if there was anyone who knew how to speak Sinhala and Jesuthasan knew. They asked us where we were going.There was a big noise at the back of the boat. Jesuthasan and the five who worked in the Kumuthini were the first to go toward the back. We didn’t know what was happening, but the Navy men ordered us to shout our names and our villages. We shouted in vain hope. Then people were called one by one by the Navy men. First all the men went, then the women started going. I was the last one to go and Nirmala was with me till then. Nirmala told me that they won’t do anything and to just go. She said they would just look at our ID card. I looked behind me and there was no one. I didn’t want to go, but I was forced to. One Navy man was up there, where I went. He pushed me, and another one stabbed me in my neck, chest and head. After that I don’t remember well, but I was pulled and thrown on top of others who were lying on the ground. These are my wounds on my head and neck.”

survivor whose baby was killed, recounts her experience,“I sat with my baby and showed the Navy man my ID card. He told me not to sit and took me upstairs. One Navy man took me by the hand, and stabbed me. I don’t remember what happened after that. The next thing I realized, I was in a hospital and was tied down with chains. I kept asking for my baby. They told me my baby was at home and feeding on cow’s milk. I was unable to open my mouth from my injuries and was on a liquid diet for one year. I only found out that my baby was killed six weeks after the incident”

கணபதிப்பிள்ளை ஆனந்தகுமாரின் ஆவேசக்குரலிது !

Kanapathypillai Anandakumar was on the boat at that time. His account is as follows,“When we were stopped, we were on the boat and were told to go inside. As we went inside, we were shut in a room. They asked us if anyone inside knew Sinhala. A few said yes and went forward. We don’t know what happened to them. Outside our room there were two Navy members standing as sentry with AKs [guns]. Outside there were two more people with grenades.They asked all the people inside to say their names loudly. So we all did. They did this so that the sound would hide what was happening in the room. They started asking people to move towards the back. As I walked towards the back, they hit my forehead with a stick. I don’t know what happened after this. Inside this room, there were very small children there under the age of one. They stabbed a 6 month old baby and ripped open her chest. Girls were also raped along with other acts of violation. People were killed. 72 people were in the boat, 36 were killed and 36 survived. But the survivors were all tortured.I was taken to the hospital and regained conscious after 4 days. I was unable to go to work. I became very sick and was unable to find work after this.”
